How to solve our crosswords

The Crossword Puzzle Pack has 24 complete crosswords: six themes (Food, Travel, Science, Arts, Sports and History), each in four sizes from Mini (11×11) to XL (17×17). Pick a category and a size to start. Click a square or a clue, then type your answers. The on-screen keyboard works on phones and tablets.

• Use Check answers to see which letters are right so far.
• Use Show solution if you want to reveal the completed grid.
• Use Print this puzzle to solve on paper.

Tips for solving

• Fill in the gimmes first. Scan all the clues and answer the ones you’re sure of. Every answer gives you letters for the crossing words.
• Short words are your friends. Three- and four-letter answers are often common words and unlock longer entries.
• Read the clue’s grammar. A plural clue means a plural answer. A past-tense clue means a past-tense answer. “Briefly” or “for short” signals an abbreviation.
• Watch for question marks and wordplay. A clue like “Spool for fishing line, or a lively dance” has two meanings for one answer (REEL).
• Use the theme. Each puzzle has a category, so in the Food pack, think about food first.
• Start small. If you’re new to crosswords, begin with a Mini and work up to the XL grids.
